A master-planned town at sixty
Miami Lakes was built as a master-planned community beginning in 1962, on land owned by the Graham family, and it incorporated in December 2000 as Miami-Dade's 31st municipality. It had 30,467 residents at the 2020 census on about 6.5 square miles, and the town counts more than 1,700 businesses.
The master plan put houses, townhomes, apartments, offices and shops together around lakes and landscaped boulevards. Many of the first neighborhoods are now 50 to 60 years old, and their original block homes have usually been through two or three air conditioners, while later sections carry newer equipment.
