AC repair in Miami that starts with a real diagnosis
A system that runs but doesn't cool, trips its breaker, or cycles every few minutes has a specific cause. We find it with meters, show it to you, and fix it from the van.

AC repair in Miami starts with a diagnosis, not a parts guess: a technician from our SW 117th Ave office tests the capacitor, contactor, motors, coil, drain and refrigerant charge, shows you the failed part, and fixes it on the spot when the part is on the van. Published 2026 Miami guides put common repairs at $150 to $600.
Warning signs
Symptoms Miami homeowners notice before the system quits
Supply air barely cooler than the room
Low charge or a dirty coil.
Outdoor unit louder than last summer
Fan bearings or high head pressure.
Runs constantly on mild days
A leak, a caked coil or attic duct leaks.
Ice on the suction line
Airflow or refrigerant.
Musty smell at startup
Mold on the coil or in the pan.
Can't hold setpoint by afternoon
Check coil and charge before summer.
Lights dim on start
A hard-starting compressor.
The job
What actually breaks on Miami air conditioners
A Miami system runs eight to ten months a year, often twelve to sixteen hours a day in summer, so parts that last fifteen years up north wear out in seven or eight here. Capacitors swell, contactors burn, fan motors lose bearings, drains clog.
Our technicians test before they touch: microfarads on the capacitor, voltage at the contactor, amps on each motor, superheat and subcooling on the refrigerant side, and the temperature split across the coil. Twenty minutes, and it's the difference between a repair that holds and a repeat visit.

What we see on this job
AC blowing warm air
Warm air with the blower running has four usual causes. The outdoor unit isn't running because its capacitor, contactor or breaker failed. It runs but the compressor doesn't, which is a start component or the compressor itself. The system is low on refrigerant, so the coil can't absorb heat. Or the coil has frozen and the air passes over ice. The first three are metered in minutes; the fourth needs thawing first. Each has a different repair and price; guessing is how a system gets a second failure.
Planning range: Capacitor replacement: $150-$300 in published 2026 guides. A market range, not our quote.

AC not turning on at all
When nothing happens at the thermostat, the fault is in the low-voltage chain: dead thermostat batteries, a tripped float switch in a full pan, a blown 3-amp fuse on the control board, a tripped breaker, or a failed transformer. Water in the pan is the most common in Miami because the drain grows algae all summer. The technician traces the 24-volt circuit from the transformer out and fixes the cause, not the symptom: a switch that tripped on a clogged drain gets the drain cleared, never a bypass.
AC short cycling
A system that starts, runs three or four minutes and stops is usually overheating on the compressor, low on refrigerant, tripping a high-pressure switch on a caked condenser coil, or being shut off by a thermostat that sits where a supply vent blows on it. Oversized equipment short cycles too, and no part fixes that. We check pressures, coil condition and thermostat location before recommending anything. Short cycling also leaves the house humid, because the coil never runs long enough to dry the air.
AC tripping the breaker
A breaker that trips once and holds after a reset might have been a power blink. One that trips again is protecting something: a compressor pulling locked-rotor amps, a shorted fan motor, a burned wire at the contactor, or a weak breaker. We meter the compressor and motors under load and inspect the disconnect and whip. Leave the breaker off until the technician arrives; every reset on a shorted compressor cooks more of the winding and moves the repair toward a replacement.
Local conditions
Repairs in Miami's concrete block homes and coastal units
Miami-Dade's housing stock has a median build year of 1980, and concrete block homes from that era carry closet air handlers with original duct patched more than once, so a repair visit often turns up a duct problem behind the part problem. Closer to the water in Miami the outdoor unit is where the trouble sits: aluminum fins pit and copper coils pinhole from salt attack, so a leak repair on a coastal condenser comes with a conversation about coatings.
Do it yourself or call
What you can safely check before calling
Worth doing yourself
- Replace a filter older than 60 days.
- Reset the breaker once.
- Look for water in the pan.
- Clear leaves off the outdoor coil.
- Replace thermostat batteries.
Leave to the technician
- Anything with refrigerant.
- Capacitors, which hold a charge with power off.
- Motor and compressor tests under load.
- Chemical coil cleaning.
- Any repeat breaker trip.
The filter, the breaker and the pan cover a good share of no-cool calls. Everything with a meter, a gauge or a chemical belongs to the technician.

The failed component
Capacitors low; compressors and coils high.
Diagnostic visit
Miami guides show $79 to $250; the repair is separate.
Refrigerant
R-410A about $100 to $150 a pound; R-22 higher.
Access
Attics, rooftops and fan coils add labor.
Time of visit
After-hours carries a premium.
System age
A repeat repair is priced beside a replacement.
Secondary damage
A motor run hot may take the capacitor with it.
FAQ
Questions Miami customers ask about AC repair
Yes, and the repair is quoted separately. Published Miami ranges for the visit run $79 to $250.
Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Daikin, Bryant, York and American Standard daily; most others use the same universal parts.
A capacitor, yes. A compressor on an R-22 system or one with a leaking coil usually isn't worth it, and you get both numbers.
Short cycling, oversizing, a dirty coil or leaking attic duct stop it dehumidifying.
Almost always. The air handler, thermostat, drain and coil are indoors, and many no-cool calls are a float switch.
Call the same number and say it isn't urgent. Daytime bookings avoid the after-hours premium.
