Local conditions

A 1920s planned city that boomed in the sixties

Hollywood was laid out from 1921 by developer Joseph Wesley Young, who planned a city of boulevards and circles, and it incorporated on November 28, 1925. It was rebuilt after the 1926 hurricane, grew from about 35,000 to more than 120,000 residents between 1960 and 1975, and had 153,067 residents at the 2020 census, the third-largest city in Broward.

That history shows up as three kinds of housing. The original neighborhoods near Young Circle and Hollywood Lakes hold 1920s and 1930s homes with plaster walls and little room for duct, the postwar boom left street after street of block homes with closet air handlers, and the beach along the concrete Broadwalk is condos and small apartment buildings in salt air.

Each one breaks differently. The oldest homes often end up with ductless heads, the boom-era block homes need their duct checked whenever the equipment is replaced, and the beach buildings need coastal-rated condensers and regular coil rinsing.

Getting to you

Just over the county line

Hollywood sits just north of Hallandale Beach and Aventura, and technicians reach it from our Medley head office by the Turnpike or the Palmetto and I-95. Because it is one of the nearest Broward cities, Hollywood stays on our regular daily routes.

Beach buildings along the Broadwalk have tight parking and usually need management approval, so tell dispatch the building name when you call.
