Installation & Replacement

Air handler replacement for Miami closets and attics

The air handler moves every cubic foot of air in the house and sits in the wettest spot in the system. When the cabinet rusts, the blower wears out or the coil leaks again, we replace it with a unit matched to your condenser.

Air handler replacement in Miami means swapping the indoor unit, coil, blower and cabinet together, matched to the outdoor condenser's capacity and refrigerant. A technician from our SW 117th Ave office checks the condenser's age and match first, since an air handler paired with an incompatible condenser loses efficiency and can void both warranties.

The job

When the indoor unit is the part that's done

Air handlers wear from the inside. Condensate and humidity rust the cabinet floor and the drain pan, the blower motor's bearings wear from constant running, and the evaporator coil pinholes over time. When two of those are failing at once, repairing them one by one costs more than a new unit.

The catch is the match. An air handler has to suit the condenser's tonnage, refrigerant and efficiency rating, and a mismatch shows up as weak cooling, humidity and a system that never reaches its rated efficiency.

What moves the price

What decides the price of an air handler

  • Size and match

Capacity and refrigerant matched to the condenser.

  • Blower type

Variable-speed blowers cost more than PSC.

  • Location

Attic installs take longer than closets.

  • Heat kit

Kit size and any breaker change.

  • Stand and plenum

Rotted stands and leaking plenums rebuilt.

  • Drain safety

Secondary pan and float switch in attics.

  • Refrigerant

    Recovery, vacuum and recharge.

What we see on this job

Closet air handlers

Most Miami homes and townhomes put the air handler in a hall or garage closet on a raised stand, with the return grille in the closet door or wall. Replacing one there is usually a same-day job, but the closet sets limits: the new unit has to fit the opening, clear the door, and leave room to change the filter and service the coil. We measure before ordering, rebuild the stand and return plenum if they're rotted or leaking, and seal the closet so it doesn't pull hot air from the attic.

Attic air handler replacement with a secondary drain pan in Miami

Attic air handlers

Attic units lie horizontally over the living space, which puts two jobs on the install: the unit has to be serviceable in a cramped, hot attic, and any water it makes has to go somewhere other than the ceiling. We set it on a proper platform with a secondary drain pan, a float switch and a secondary drain line to the eave, and we insulate and seal every duct connection. Work in a Miami attic in summer is scheduled for the morning.

Heat kit sizing

Most Miami air handlers carry electric heat strips for the handful of cold nights a year, and they're often oversized for the job. A 10 kW kit on a small house can trip breakers and dry the air when a 5 kW kit would do, and the kit size also sets the breaker and wire size at the panel. We size the heat kit from the heating load and your panel capacity rather than copying the old one, and on heat pump systems it's sized as backup, not primary heat.

What is included

What an air handler replacement includes

  • Condenser match confirmed first
  • Closet or attic space measured
  • Refrigerant recovered
  • Stand and return plenum checked or rebuilt
  • Secondary pan and float switch on attic units
  • Heat kit sized to the load and panel
  • Brazed joints purged and pressure-tested
  • Charge weighed in after vacuum
  • Airflow set and tested at start-up

Local conditions

Closets, attics and humidity in Miami-Dade

Country Walk's townhomes and condominium buildings, a few minutes from our service office, mostly use closet air handlers with tight clearances, so we measure the opening before a unit is ordered. In attic installs across Miami-Dade, the building code requires R-8 insulation on duct in unconditioned space, and the humidity that stays above 70 percent most of the year is why the secondary pan and float switch go in on every attic unit.

Step by step

How an air handler replacement runs

  1. 1

    Check the condenser

    Age, refrigerant and capacity confirmed.

  2. 2

    Measure the space

Closet opening or attic access and platform.

  3. 3

    Recover the refrigerant

    Charge pulled before disconnecting.

  4. 4

    Remove the old unit

    Stand, plenum and drain inspected.

  5. 5

    Set the new air handler

    Level, sealed, drained and wired.

  6. 6

    Connect and charge

Brazed, vacuumed and charged by weight.

  7. 7

    Start-up

Airflow, heat kit and float switch tested.

Timing

How long an air handler swap takes

A closet air handler with a sound stand and plenum is usually a single-day job. Attic units, rebuilt stands or plenums, and a heat kit that needs a new breaker can stretch it into a second day. The mechanical inspection follows, and the system runs normally in the meantime.
